Students may use federal financial aid toward a Non-IU study abroad program if they meet all of the following criteria:
- They are enrolled for full-time study while abroad
- They have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
- They are not on academic probation
- Their courses will be accepted as transfer credit toward their degree requirements (major, minor, distributional or required electives)
IU scholarships, grants, and loans may be applicable to Non-IU program costs with some exceptions. Please carefully check these exceptions before you commit to a program.

Placeholder Course Enrollment Process
- Visit Education Abroad to discuss whether you may use your financial aid abroad. You should bring a detailed description of your program with you. If you are unsure of your existing financial aid award package, see One.IU for verification.
- Review our Financial Aid Exceptions List and consult your home campus financial aid office about the transferrability of individual scholarships or grants.
- If approved to study abroad, complete the proper documentation by November 15 for spring programs and by May 1 for summer, fall, and academic year programs.
- Enroll in the proper placeholder course (details and eligibility below).
- Return to One.IU for final verification of your financial aid for the term you will be abroad.
Note: there is a service fee of $100.82 associated with enrolling in the placeholder course.
