Associate Vice President for Education Abroad

Jennifer Engel

Jennifer Engel, Ph.D. is the Associate Vice President for Education Abroad at Indiana University, having system-wide responsibility for education abroad programs on all IU campuses. Prior to coming to IU, Jennifer was the vice president for academic affairs and experiential learning at CIS Abroad, providing leadership in the areas of student learning and assessment; curriculum and program development; and innovation in education abroad.  

Before joining CIS Abroad, Jennifer served as the Executive Director of International Programs at Loyola University Chicago, responsible for partnership cultivation, program development, strategic planning, and the functional areas of: education abroad; international student and scholar services; English as a second language; the International House; and recruitment and support for the University’s three Global Centers. This role built on her experience as Executive Director of Global Learning at the University of South Carolina, which included education abroad program development and administration as well as campus internationalization. She has also held administrative and teaching roles at Marygrove College.  

Jennifer earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy with a focus on international and comparative education from the University of South Carolina and an M.A. in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University. An Endeavour Fellow, Jennifer has been involved with NAFSA: Association of International Educators, The Forum on Education Abroad, and the Association of International Education Administrators, holding leadership positions, mentoring new professionals, and presenting nationally and internationally.

  Susan manages the day-to-day operations of Education Abroad, serves as personnel representative and primary supervisor of both professional and support staff, and oversees institutional cooperation with several large co-sponsoring organizations.   Joseph advises for IU programs in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. He also serves on the steering committee of the IU Bloomington Academic Advising Council. Originally from New Harmony, Indiana, Joseph earned a Master’s of International Affairs from the O’Neill and Hamilton Lugar Schools, finishing his degree abroad in Germany and Italy. He continued to live in Germany after his exchange and worked with German students studying abroad in the US. As an IU alumnus, he enjoys paying his experience forward by helping fellow Hoosiers go across the world. New Orleans, Vienna, and Osaka are among the coolest places he’s ever been, and his hope is to visit Iran someday.

  Originally from Minnesota, Austin advises for IU programs in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Estonia. Austin studied abroad in Regensburg, Germany and multiple cities in China. After graduating from University of North Dakota with a BA in German and International Studies, he taught English abroad in Amberg, Germany on a Fulbright award. He has a Masters in Higher Education and Student affairs from the Ohio State University. Since his first study abroad, he has been a strong proponent of study abroad because of how transformative an experience it can be and looks forward to creating similar opportunities for students. The coolest place he's been to is Famen Temple in China, and his next dream destination is Egypt, Romania, or Greece.

  Lucia advises for IU programs in Italy, France, and Scandinavia. She is a first-generation student and an Indiana University alumna. She holds a Masters in International Higher Education from Boston College and Universidad de Guadalajara. While at IU,  she studied abroad in India and Denmark.  Lucia enjoys helping students realize that studying abroad is possible for everyone and enjoys seeing how much they grow through the process. The coolest place she’s ever visited is Machu Picchu, and her dream is to do an African Safari.

  Sam advises for IU programs in Australia, England, Ireland, and New Zealand. In his role as assistant director, Sam has responsibilities for program development, health, safety and risk management, student advising, and provides supervision for the education abroad peer advisor program.  Sam studied abroad for an academic year in Lancaster, England as an undergraduate. He has a Masters in International Development Studies from Ohio University and studied abroad in Ecuador as a graduate student. The coolest place he’s ever been is Christchurch, New Zealand.

  Amanda supervises the advising team and leads our marketing/outreach initiatives. She also supports students pursuing non-IU programs and supports inbound exchange students. Amanda studied abroad in Munich, Germany and Kunming, China and taught English in Prague, Czech Republic. She has a Masters in Intercultural Relations from Lesley University. She fell in love with the process of studying abroad and enjoys helping students research programs and scholarships. The coolest place she’s ever been is Hong Kong (twice!), and her dream is to visit Afghanistan one day.

  Laura Kremer is responsible for all of the financial, budgetary, and data functions for IU Education Abroad and the IU High School Honors Program for Foreign Languages. She provides assistance to other departments, students and parents who have financial concerns or questions in regards to study abroad. She received a B.S. in Finance from the University of Louisville and has worked for Indiana University over 27 years, 25 of those years being with IU Education Abroad.
