Frequently Asked Questions

Non-IU Petition

No. Only one submission per student, per term. Ensure that you do your research in advance.

Use your own academic advisement report, your proposed program’s information, and the IU Credit Transfer Service (for looking up previously-approved transfer credit).

The non-IU petition process is stringent. IU has a vast number of affordable, pre-approved study, research, intern, and service-learning abroad programs in a range of countries, one that likely will align with your own compelling academic rationale! Cost, location, and ineligibility for IU programs are not valid reasons for approving a petition.

Completing a Credit Transfer Agreement

Only students with approved non-IU petitions will be given the instructions on how to complete a Credit Transfer Agreement.

Students can only complete two CTAs per term, so if you’ve already used those, then no, you cannot submit a new CTA. If it’s past the deadline, students cannot submit a new CTA.

International Admissions will post undistributed (i.e. DEPT-UN 100) credit if the course has never been transferred to IU before. Otherwise, they will use the transfer credit that's already in the Credit Transfer Service.

Yes, you can still get transfer credit if a) the transcript comes from an accredited institution and b) you earn a grade of C or higher. You do not need to update our office or International Admissions if your specific course enrollment changes after you submit your CTA.

Submitting a Notification of Acceptance

Only students with approved non-IU petitions will be given the instructions on how to complete a Notification of Acceptance.

Financial Aid

It depends. Certain types of aid, such as state-based aid (i.e. 21st Century and O’Bannon), 521 funds, and fee remissions cannot be used toward a non-IU program. Contact Student Central if you have further questions. Students must be enrolled at IU in order to access any financial aid or scholarships disbursed through the university.

Students with approved petitions will receive guidance on completing the appropriate form, based on their financial aid status.

Our office is happy to complete financial aid forms for students who have an approved petition on file. Complete your part(s) of the form and email it to edabroad@iu.edu.

What Happens If

Our office does not provide support or guidance to students who are not pursuing an approved study abroad program. This includes (but is not limited to): application endorsement, academic planning, visa guidance or documentation, financial aid forms, and general education (World Languages & Cultures) or other degree requirement fulfillment.

We do not accept late applications to IU programs. Please select another program. Our advising team would be happy to help you revisit your research.

Processing Times

Deadlines:

  • Summer programs: December 15
  • Fall and academic year programs: December 15
  • Spring programs: July 15

10 business days.

This depends on how long it takes for you to ensure your official transcript is sent back to IU. Generally, we advise it can take up to six months after your program. Graduating seniors need to plan accordingly.

Our office reports WLC completion to the University three times per year, so depending on when your transfer credit posts to your IU transcript (so we can verify that you successfully transferred at least 6 credits), your name may go on the next list. Students with imminent graduation can contact our office at edabroad@iu.edu to inquire about rush processing.
