Tokyo-IES

• This is an IU Co-Sponsored Program
• Semester Program with IES Abroad at their Center in Makuhari (Tokyo suburb) and Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS)
• Courses taught in Japanese and English with students from U.S. colleges and universities

• IES Abroad "Language & Culture" program* 
• Courses in Japanese history, art, anthropology and sociology taught in English for IES Abroad students only  
• Japanese language classes at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) 
• Orientation program on-site  
• Unpaid field experience as a participant-observer in a local business, non-profit or governmental organization 
  • 8-10 hours per week 

• Access to sports facilities and library at Kanda University of International Studies

• IES housing options include:
  • Japanese-speaking homestay
    • Only available during the fall semester
    • Accommodations vary by placement and are limited
    • Two meals per day, weekends included
  • Apartments
    • Single room in single-sex suites of 3-4 residents with Japanese or other IES students
    • Meals not included
• Note: Indiana University will not support plans for students to obtain independent housing. Students are required to live in program-provided housing in Tokyo

You may apply if you:

• are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
• are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college
• have taken or are enrolled in second semester college-level Japanese
• have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

Students who have completed four semesters of Japanese or more should review information and eligibility criteria for the Nagoya-IU program.

Students must have a passport valid for six months beyond program's end date.

Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.

Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of Education Abroad. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

• IU scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs with some exceptions. Please carefully check these exceptions before you commit to a program.

• National Freeman-ASIA Scholarship awarded on a competitive, need-based basis (applications due once a year in March)

• IES Abroad guaranteed aid of up to $7,000 (semester) or up to $3,000 (summer) based on confirmation of official FAFSA Expected Family Contribution. See details. Also see IES Abroad Scholarships and Aid available.
