Vienna-IES

• This is an IU Co-Sponsored Program
• Semester Program with IES Abroad
• Center located at Palais Corbelli, an 18th-century palace in the heart of Vienna
• Typical enrollment: 100-120 students from U.S. colleges and universities

• IES Abroad "Business, Economics & International Relations," "European Society & Culture," "Music," or "Psychology & Social Sciences" programs*
• Area studies courses in culture studies, European history, art history, literature, political science, psychology, finance, marketing, management, law, music, business economics, international business, etc. taught in English or German for IES Abroad students only
• Private classes with professional musicians and faculty of Vienna Conservatory of Music or Vienna Universität für Musik
• Option for students with advanced language to enroll in courses at University of Vienna (Spring semester only)
• Extensive field trips and cultural events
• Optional, unpaid 3-credit internship
  • 4-10 hours/week (depends on field)
  • Placements in arts and culture, business, education, or public service

Course Load

Vienna IES Programs

• 16 IU credits per semester
  
  • German language course
  • IES Abroad area studies courses (business majors must choose at least one 3-credit business course)
  • Optional, 3-credit internship
  • Option of courses in German at local university (Spring semester only)

Vienna IES Music Program (Only)

• 17 IU credits for 5 IES Abroad courses
  • German language course (4 cr.)
  • Music History (M401 fall only, M402 spring only, 4 cr.)
  • Applied music, private instructors (4 cr.)
  • IES Abroad Music Workshop (2 cr.)
  • IES Abroad area studies elective course or internship (3 cr.)
  • All credits applicable to bachelor's degree in Music

Shared rooms in one of the following options:

• Apartment with American students (studio apartment may be available for an additional cost)
• Residence hall with Austrian and international students (additional cost)
• Private residences (homestays unavailable during pandemic)

Students are required to live in program-provided housing in Vienna.

You may apply if you:

• are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
• are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college
• have approximately a 2.75 cumulative GPA

Music Program applicants must have completed Music T232 (with a grade of C or better) and Music T252. Applicants must also have approval of their Music department and pass upper divisional exam by the end of spring semester. Performance majors also need approval of major performance study professor.

Business majors must have (or will have) successfully completed the KSB prerequisites of the Business Integrative Core (or equivalent coursework at an IU campus outside Bloomington) by the start of the program

Students must have a passport valid for six months beyond program's end date.

Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.

Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of Education Abroad. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.

Fall 2023

• IU portion of fee: $241.95
• IES portion of fee*paid to IU bursar: $20,990 (IES academic fees, housing, health insurance, orientation, and local excursions)
• Meals: $3,100
• International Airfare:  IES estimates $950 - $1,230

*Program fee reflects discounted fee for IU students after benefit of the $2,000 IES Public University Grant. Based on published IES materials. Indiana University cannot guarantee the prices charged by IES and is not responsible for any price increase or change. 

Personal expenses and vacation travel additional. Initial prepayment of $500 due April 4, 2023.

Spring 2024

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

• IU scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs with some exceptions. Please carefully check these exceptions before you commit to a program.

• IU Deborah F. Tobias Study Abroad Scholarships of $1,250-1,750, awarded on basis of financial need and academic merit; women preferred

• Music applicants are automatically considered for the Jean Sinor Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, awarded on basis of financial need and academic merit.

• IES Abroad guaranteed aid of up to $7,000 (semester) or up to $3,000 (summer) based on confirmation of official FAFSA Expected Family Contribution. See details. Also see IES Abroad Scholarships and Aid available.
