The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health is sponsoring a unique opportunity for students to participate in a summer fellowship (internship) program at the Rwanda Ministry of Health working directly with the Minister and her staff.
Students who participate in the internship will have the privilege to work closely with Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, the Honorable Minister of Health of Rwanda, and develop working relationships with other Ministry staff. Duties and activities may include researching a variety of public health topics, supporting the drafting and translation of written documents, supporting the Honorable Minister during travels to other parts of Rwanda, managing blogs and social media, all of which serve to immerse students in Rwandan culture.
For Summer 2016, the fellowship will cover travel expenses and provide a stipend to cover most or all lodging and board costs for two students (undergraduate or masters). The IUPUI preceptor will be Dr. Suzanne Babich, Professor of Health Policy and Management and Associate Dean of Global Health.

Undergraduate students will enroll in one of the following courses:
Graduate students will enroll in PBHL-P 602 Public Health Internship.
The number of credits varies by course and the number of hours worked in the internship.

- Program Eligibility
You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- Graduate students must have completed the MPH core curriculum.
- have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.
- Costs and Financial Aid
Summer 2016
For 2016, a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation will cover some program expenses for two students, providing a stipend of $2,000 for airfare to Kigali and $5,500 for living expenses. The estimated costs for the program include:
- Airfare: $2,000
- Housing: $1,200
- Meals and other living expenses: $2,000
- Passport: $140
- Insurance: $90 ($30/month)
- Study Abroad Administrative Fee: $80
Total estimated cost: $5,510 + standard tuition and fees
Financial Aid and Scholarships:
- IU scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs with some exceptions. Please carefully check these exceptions before you commit to a program.
