Students interested in International Studies can choose from a wide range of programs. To narrow your options, browse programs by other related fields of interest or by programs in a specific region. Please note that each program has different academic strengths, and students should review the course offerings to find the most appropriate match with their own academic goals.
Students may apply for any program as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. While INTL majors must complete their core, thematic, and capstone courses on the Bloomington campus, they can satisfy requirements for the regional concentration, foreign language, and the required overseas experience (6 weeks minimum) while studying abroad. Occasionally, students are able to take courses toward the thematic concentration, but only with approval from the department. Since earning specific "INTL" course numbers abroad is not common, students may need to look for upper-level credit in another department to fulfill degree requirements. Students should be prepared to show course materials to the appropriate departments for final course approval at the conclusion of the program.
Depending on when they study abroad, INTL students are also encouraged to start preparing for their capstone projects while abroad. Check the INTL website for approved electives. Students should be aware that certain regional concentrations are difficult to complete back at IU due to a lack of classes or mentors. Students choosing Oceania (Australia & New Zealand) or Southeast Asia have had particular difficulties.
