Indiana University Bloomington ranks 4th nationwide among over 1,000 U.S. universities in number of students studying abroad, according to the 2021-22 Open Doors report published by the Institute of International Education.
The Open Doors figures only partially account for the full profile of IUB student mobility since the published total of 2,498 includes only U.S. students earning credit abroad. 148 IUB international students also pursued study outside the U.S. on IU programs in 2021-22. And an additional 147 U.S. and international students took part in non-credit educational programs which included volunteer service, internships and research.
IU is ranked #2 nationally for mid-length (i.e, semester-long) study abroad participation and is ranked #1 in the B1G 10 for study abroad. IU also placed in the Top 40 for international students in the U.S. and is home to more than 8,000 international students across all 9 campuses and regional centers.
The Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States, has conducted an annual statistical survey of campuses regarding international students in the United States since 1919, and with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since the early 1970s.
