View online. | Dear Study Abroad Returnees,The application for Peer Counselor for the Office of Overseas Study is open!
We are seeking one well-qualified student who is keen to share their study abroad experience with others. Working in the Office of Overseas Study allows you to share your study abroad journey –researching programs, applying, going abroad, and returning home – with other IU students.
Our goal is to hire students who represent different world areas and the diversity of the IU population. Work-study eligibility is not required. Please review the information below carefully before you apply.
All application materials must be received no later than midnight Friday, July 8, 2022.
| | ![]() | | Position DetailsStudents will have a regular schedule of approximately 5-6 hours every week between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., M-F. Additional hours are available for special projects, presentations, and events, which can include evenings or weekends. Presentations and events may be a combination of virtual and in-person delivery.
Salary: $15 per hour Application deadline: Friday, July 8, at midnight Interviews with selected applicants: July 21 and 22 (via Zoom) Mandatory training sessions: August 17, 18, and 19 (in-person at the Leo R. Dowling International Center
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates must be available to interview on one of the dates listed above.
Eligibility
To be considered for an Office of Overseas Study Peer Counselor position, you must:
- Commit to working for the entire 2022-23 academic year
- Have successfully completed an IU study abroad program lasting at least four months
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, patience, responsibility and maturity
- Have at least five hours of availability, M-F, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Commit to attending our training sessions
Expectations & Responsibilities
Peer Counselors will be expected to:
- Explain the basics of study abroad to inquiring students
- Guide students through program selection and the application process
- Direct students to study abroad resources
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the host country in which they studied and a general knowledge of other IU and non-IU programs and procedures
- Work scheduled shifts in the Office of Overseas Study between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., M-F
- Set up and staff information tables on campus, as available.
- Help keep materials updated by reviewing program binders and other in-office materials
- Give classroom, residence hall and student group presentations about study abroad (in person or via Zoom)
- Assist with information meetings and orientations (in person or via Zoom)
- Help develop recruitment strategies and materials as needed
- Provide additional office support, as needed
- Attend initial and on-going training sessions
